A MARK of how much the town's young golfers have improved will be tested next Thursday when the BGA Juniors take on South Lancs in the final of the Lancashire Inter-District League final.

Bolton Golf Club will be hosting the event, a re-run of last year when, after holding South Lancs to 3-3 in the foursomes, Bolton crumbled to an 11-1 defeat in the singles.

Another year on and Bolton appear to be much stronger. underlined by their 14-3 defeat of Fylde at Horwich on Monday.

Without the services of three of their top golfers, Simon Walsh, Matthew Walsh and John Maree, Bolton took the foursomes 5-3 and never looked back coasting home 9-3 in the singles.

It will mean disappointment for three of the winning team, however, as manager Steve Ashton will field his strongest line-up for the final.

"I have to go with my lowest handicap players, but the three who drop out will be there," said Ashton. "I am trying to produce a squad and they are very much part of it. South Lancs are a very good team but we will be after revenge after last year's heavy defeat.
