A DRINK-driver who drove off after knocking down a man at a zebra crossing claimed she didn't stop because she had heard reports of bricks being thrown at cars in the neighbourhood.

Margaret Broadie, aged 46, of Churchill Drive, Little Lever, said she had not been aware she had hit a pedestrian.

She admitted drink driving in High Street, Bolton, driving without due care and attention and failing to stop after an accident and report it.

Rochdale magistrates yesterday ordered Broadie to carry out 80 hours community service, put her on probation for 12 months, ordered her to pay £500 compensation, banned her from driving for two years and fined her £160.

Forensic evidence linked Broadie's damaged car to the accident.

Eric Heywood, prosecuting, said the injured pedestrian, Peter Robinson, aged 21, suffered cuts and bruises and damage to a ligament and his left leg.

Mr Robinson was thrown several yards and the impact cracked the windscreen of Broadie's car.

She drove off and failed to report the accident. When she was traced by police, she gave a reading of 84 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

The legal limit is 35 in 100.

Mike Garstang, defending, said Broadie had been filled with remorse when told someone had been injured.
