WHY would the Liberal Democrats send leaflets to 13,000 homes, questioning voters about the long proposed and expensively dumped A5225 link road, the Pemberton-Chequerbent road?

For many months, this suddenly-dropped roadway was discussed, and exhibitions denoting how the road was to be set later faltered. Glossy brochures for interested people were either sent out to people's homes, or were given away as if there were no tomorrow.

Because those concerned with financing the A5225 and other mooted roadways had no cash, the schemes were laid away.

I don't really know what the good or bad effects this link road could cause for everyone, but the Hindley, Daisy Hill and Westhoughton fields and pastures, the lush acreages of green, the beautiful unchanged acreages, seem to have been snatched for housebuilding.

There are, thankfully, some green spaces left for people's enjoyment, like the grand Lee Hall Park, which so very many (SWAN) people have devoutly battled to save for posterity.

Even though the A5225 didn't get started, quite a lot of building work went merrily on.

The land east of Hindley and Abram Grammar School became huge private estates of pricey new homes, and land adjoining Whitley, Aspull and Hindley Park High School became building land, even though education officials vowed before parent assemblies the land wasn't required for building on.

Do you believe words spoken by the leaders in their fields? I certainly don't.

We are repeatedly advised that traffic fumes can impair our health, yet builders still clamour to raise houses on scraps of land. Often hedgerows (the habitats of wild birds, creatures etc) suffer.

This part of Lancashire is fast becoming a traffic-burdened housing jungle. Green spaces are fewer!
