"HELLO Dolly" -- it's so good to see it back where it belongs -- on stage in Bolton!

It is easy to forget just how many good songs there are, the strength of humour, and the wonderful array of characters which feature in this show.

However, bearing this in mind, together with the masses of period costume, and large chorus that is needed, it is an ambitious project for any theatre company to undertake. St Paul's members, led by producer Paul Cohen, tackled it with gusto to produce a colourful production that does this popular musical justice.

All the principals put in strong performances but I must single out Ian Barlow, who played Cornelius Hackl. He gave a wonderful terrific all-round performance, including singing, dancing and comic acting. His scenes with the also brilliant Christian Brabin, as Barnaby Tucker, Cornelius's assistant, were wonderful.

Joe Marsden as the wealthy Vandergelder also shone, with his terrific voice.

But of course the show's success really hinges on Dolly Levi, and Eileen Powell provided the bubbly personality and charm that the character demands.

The costumes were wonderful, and the scenery, although slightly sparse, served its purpose -- a little less noise when shifting it around behind the curtain as the action continued is perhaps needed.

Musicians Helen and Michael Walker, together with musical director, Peter Barnett, also put in a brilliant performance.

This was a showcase worthy of commemorating St Paul's 70th anniversary production. Beverly Greenberg
