BIKERS are being warned to look after their motorcycles after a spate of thefts.

Police figures reveal that 43 bikes have been stolen in the last three months -- 18 of which have never been found.

They are urging owners to fit security devices and park them in a safe place.

A spokesman from Greater Manchester Police said: "Motorbikes are an easy target for the opportunist thief and can be bundled onto a van in seconds. All machines, including mopeds, are at risk.

"Professional thieves target the machines they want. They either steal them for resale or break them up and rebuild them into damaged motorcycles. Some are stolen for the overseas market."

Some shops and dealers offer discounts on security devices when you buy a bike and the Motorcycle Retailers Association should be able to advise you on where to find the best offers from reputable dealers.

Police also said people should be careful when buying a second hand motorbike, and should always ask to see the original registration document and check if the frame or engine number has been tampered with.

Police crime prevention experts say owners can lower the risk by parking in busy public places during the day; parking in well-lit areas at night and varying where you park.

You can also use custom-built motorcycle areas, especially ones with fixed parking stands or loops and keep a look out for car parks displaying the Secured Car Park sign.

Riders should always engage the steering lock; attach the bike to an immovable object where possible or use a quality padlock or u-lock through the rear wheel or bike frame.
