POLICE are being presented with new riot gear to protect them in dangerous situations.

By the end of March, every officer in Bolton will have received the public order coverall, claimed to be the most effective in the country.

The made-to-measure dark blue one-piece gives protection against heat, flame, fuel and common chemicals which officers can encounter in riots.

The new coverall is also designed to last longer than its predecessor.

The old uniform could only be cleaned five times by specialists, while the 2001 model will take up to 25 cleanings in the washing machine at home.

The uniform incorporates a flame-retardant outer material that is lightweight and breathable, with a separate and permanently attached waterproof inner liner.

This provides a barrier that extends to the collar, cuffs and legs to ensure total liquid protection.

The garment also has a one-piece stand collar to protect the neck, with a beard guard to the front of the collar.
