BRIAN Lara scored a superb unbeaten century and shared in a 183-run partnership with captain Jimmy Adams to rescue West Indies from a poor start on the first day of the third Test against Australia in Adelaide.
Lara, who only declared himself fit on the eve of the match, finished on 136 after a trademark innings including 21 fours and a towering six. The touring side were 274 for four at stumps.
They came together at 86 for three and Adams was dismissed for 49 seven minutes before stumps at the Adelaide Oval.
West Indies' first-day total was easily their best score of the series following their innings defeats in the first two Tests. Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie claimed all four wickets for 56 runs.
