THIS is the first glimpse of the multi-million pound development which will take shape on the site of Bolton Wanderers' former stadium.

The impressive 21st Century building -- set to be home to Woolworth's flagship store Big W -- will be the centrepiece of a regenerated Burnden Park site.

work on the brick and metal structure, which sports large "W" logos and blue and orange stripes, is said to be on schedule and should be completed in July.

A petrol station and a possible leisure complex may be built alongside it.

The artist's impression has been released by Orbit Developments which is hoping the buildings will regenerate an area plagued with vandalism.

A spokesman for Orbit, which is working on the site alongside retailer United Norwest Co-op, said: "It's a modern design which will revamp the whole area. The first time I saw the drawing I thought it looked quite funky -- it's sure to draw people in."

The scheme means that as early as next summer the thousands of football fans who once milled around the old stadium -- forever immortalised by Salford painter LS Lowry in his classic £1.9 million work "Going to the Match" -- will be replaced by thousands of shoppers.

The Burnden Park pitch, torn up after Bolton Wanderers left for their new stadium at Middlebrook in 1997, will become the development's car park.

Big W will house a number of product lines ranging from electrical appliances to health and beauty along with all products found in Woolworths stores across one floor.

The site used to be occupied by a Co-op store but its closure and subsequent vandalism meant redevelopment of the area became an even greater priority following the demolition of Burnden Park.
