BOLTON Institute has launched a pilot scheme to help fire service managers.
The programme, which can lead to a graduate apprenticeship HNC/D in Fire Service Management, is believed to be one of only two in the country and the first in the north.
The Institute's partners are the National Local Government Training Organisation and Greater Manchester Fire Service.
Some of their staff, together with officers from the West Midlands Fire Service, are taking part in the programme.
Mr Peter Moran of Bolton Institute said: "The course is designed for junior and middle management staff who want to improve their organisational performance and operational planning skills to prepare them for more senior roles in the service.
"The first course is already underway and 12 officers attended a two-day workshop at the beginning of the month."
The course includes a specially-constructed learning module on an internet web site.
Mr Moran added: "We are delighted that two of the country's leading fire services have recognised the quality and potential of the programme.
"Their support will help Bolton Institute develop additional modules for which we hope to secure a Government grant or funding from the European Community."
