AMBULANCE chiefs have welcomed a jail sentence imposed on a teenager who attacked a Bury paramedic.
They hope the prison term will send out a warning that other offenders -- who attack ambulance crews -- could face the same punishment.
Darren Vincent Hampson, 19, who lives in Blackpool, is now serving a three month sentence for the attack on the ambulanceman in Manchester city centre on April 1 this year.
Bury ambulance technician Nick Sutcliffe and colleague Salmon Desai were responding to an emergency call in the city when the attack happened.
They were taking Hampson to Manchester Royal Infirmary when he asked them to stop and let him out of the vehicle. It was then that a scuffle took place and Mr Sutcliffe was punched in the stomach.
GMAS chief executive Mr John Burnside said: "This three month sentence sends out a message loud and clear to people that any kind of abuse, be it physical or verbal, will simply not be tolerated."
