JOHN McGinlay will have a foot in both camps when Wanderers meet Yeovil Town in the third round of the FA Cup.

The legendary former Bolton star spent three years with the famous giant-killers early in his career and still has fond memories of the club, who currently top the Nationwide Conference and are on course for League football for the first time in their 108-year history.

With Wanderers involved there is no question which team Super John will be rooting for - that's no contest - but he's delighted his less famous former club is back on the FA Cup trail and booked in for a plum tie at the Reebok on January 6.

"Gerry Gow took me to Yeovil and I had three good years there," McGinlay recalls.

"I was a right winger in those days. I played against a few league clubs while I was there and played in the famous cup win at Cambridge in 1987.

"We were part time in those days. I worked for one of the directors on a building site. Now they're all geared up, full-time, top of the Conference, a new ground (the famous slope has gone), and they've got a good manager who is level-headed and knows what it's all about. I'm chuffed for them and for the chairman, John Fry, who I know. I'm sure they'll bring a good following up here."

Before next month's tie, McGinlay will turn back the clock to his amateur days when he makes his debut for local side Tempest United against Hesketh Bank in the West Lancs League at Chew Moor on Saturday - paying £2 subs for the privilege.

"I've known their manager Mick Farnworth for years and I need to get myself fit," he explained, confirming that he and his family are home to stay after a brief spell in the United States. "I 've got a few things going on at the moment and don't know when I can play and when I can't. But as long as nothing comes up, I'm available.

"The only probelm is that all our stuff is still getting shipped back from America so I've had to send an SOS to Reebok for some boots!"

Two ex-Wanderers from an earlier generation - Roy Hartle and Tommy Banks - will give their forthright views on the game and reminiscing on the glory years, 1958 and all that, on BBC GMR's Soccer Night tonight. The programme, hosted by Jimmy Wagg, is broadcast from 7pm to 10pm.
