BOLTON could be set for another winter flu epidemic unless patients at most risk get a vaccine jab quickly, a health boss has warned.

Figures for November reveal that more than 50 per cent of those eligible for a free flu jab in Wigan and Bolton Health Authority are yet to take up the offer.

And that figure could prove to be higher still as 31pc of GPs in the area have not yet returned their statistics.

Those eligible for a free jab include anyone aged 65 or over, those suffering from heart or lung disease, kidney disorders, any sort of chronic disease, or those with reduced immunity levels.

And the health authority is anxious to immunise as many people as possible in a bid to prevent a repeat of last year's flu epidemic and the resulting hospital bed crisis.

Dr Robert Aston, the health authority's head of communicable diseases, said: "We are now entering the flu season and it really is important that people at risk get the influenza vaccine.

"It will reduce the likelihood of serious illness or death and these people can save themselves a lot of suffering.

"So far, for November, 69pc of GPs have responded, showing 49.5pc coverage for patients in high risk groups.

"That is something we hope will improve. We want to get as many people immunised as possible."

He added: "Some GP practices have done better than others and we are reminding them of the need to promote this for the good of people at risk.

"But I understand the pressures they are under."

Dr Aston warned that the vaccine would only protect people against the most serious form of influenza.

It would not stop people catching simple colds or other winter diseases.

Those in high-risk groups can claim their free jab by contacting their local GP.

The qualification age for a free vaccine was reduced from 75 this autumn by the Government.
