SHAKERS midfielder Jason Jarrett has been singled out by Bury boss Andy Preece to become a star - as long as he remembers to play both halves.

Jarrett had an indifferent first 45 minutes in Saturday's morale-boosting win against Mansfield Town but in the second period he was superb, linking defence and attack and scoring the vital winner with a terrific header.

Preece was pleased with the homegrown youngster but said he still had things to learn.

"His second half performance was excellent but he needs to do that over the full 90 minutes and he knows that," said the boss.

"During our bad run the front two have been a bit isolated and Jason linked well with them, though he has to remember his defensive duties as well. He has a great engine on him and if he can perform consistently well for the full game then we will have a very good player."

Preece, who was also delighted with the performance of debutante Chris Armstrong, admitted to going out and having a few drinks on Saturday night after his side broke their miserable run of 10 games without a victory.

"It doesn't matter what competition it was, we needed that," he said. "When you're on a bad run a win is very hard to come by so I really enjoyed the Mansfield result.

"But it doesn't mean everything is alright because it isn't. We were poor in the first half and there are still things we need to work on.

"I went for a few drinks after the game but now I'm fully focused on Saturday and the Oldham match because the league is our bread and butter and we need a win.
