THE annual Karen Hoathers GEM Appeal Road and Trail Race took place at Littleborough on a clear, sunny morning, but with a strong cold wind facing the runners.

The course involved a tough, hilly but scenic route, attracting nearly 100 runners and raising money for research into genetic diseases.

Rob Jackson won the race for the second successive year after breaking clear on the road climb.

James Logue of Horwich Harriers, like Jackson a fell running international, took the second prize, just holding off a fast finishing David Shaw of Bolton Harriers.

Alan Higginson had a fine run to finish fourth overall, and also take the first veteran over 40 prize. Alex McVey on his return from injury took a solid sixth place, while his coach, the evergreen Tony Hesketh, continued his excellent form to finish ninth overall, and also take the first over 50 prize.

Louis Higginson, son of Alan, was again first junior in his age group. Gordon Entwistle (Horwich) also completed the race.

Spenborough's prolific racer Kath Drake took the ladies first prize, with Horwich's Mary Claughan in fourth. Pat Purr (Bolton) was first lady over 55.
