FLOODS and gales in Scotland, tornadoes on the South coast, anti cyclones sweeping in across the Irish Sea, weather alerts galore. Enough to make anyone stay in bed on a Sunday morning -- anyone except the gutsy members of the Clarion who turned out in their usual large numbers for the Sunday ride to Elswick.

Their optimism was well founded as they made their way over Belmont moors. The well-broken cloud allowed plenty of sunshine, though the wind had a wintery edge to it, especially on the downhill sections.

We skirt Preston's busy roads, taking the route through the newly developed docks and into the lanes of the Fylde District. The strong crosswinds were neutered somewhat by the hedgerows of the narrow lanes, though gaps in them gave concern at times.

The icy fingers of winter were felt during a couple of brief showers of hail that gave way once more to bright skies and sunshine as we entered Elswick in nice time time for lunch.

The fine conditions continued as we made our way back through alternative lanes to Preston, though dark skies could be seen on the other side of the Ribble. At last the rain arrived, fortunately though we were now at Chorley, a mere 12 miles from home.

A good day out, despite the forecasts, and the icy cold dousing we had in the last few miles just made that hot bath or shower all the more comforting. Rosy cheeks weather is back.
