CAN anyone tell me why is it that none of these hauliers or farmers ever tell us where cuts should be made to fund their reduction in fuel tax? They already pay no tolls to use our motorways, and drivers pay half the income tax of their colleagues in countries like Germany. They also get a free NHS without having to pay health insurance.

Just six months ago people and newspapers were calling for more money for pensioners, and now we are expected to spend billions on reducing road fuel costs.

If France paid the same as us in income tax and road charges, I would be the first to say our petrol is too high. The fact that, as a whole, taxation in the UK is far lower than Europe makes a mockery of this blockade.

On the one hand, newspapers like the Mail condemn any plans to harmonise taxes in Europe, then they say we should pay the same rates as Europe. I wish they'd make their minds up.
