FORMER teeny Aussie soap star Jason Donovan has stepped in to save the show by making a return visit to Bolton -- the town he last visited 11 years ago.

The former Neighbours star has agreed to appear at the Chicago Rock Cafe in place of soul singer Alexander O'Neal.

The legendary American singer was booked to play at the venue as part of a glittering triple bill show at the Bridge Street bar on Thursday, but has had his passport revoked by the US Government and is now unlikely to make it to Britain at all.

However, Jason Donovan has been persuaded to step in and save the day.

The Aussie performer will be deserting the West End for one night only to play alongside Right Said Fred and 80s duo Go West.

Jason is no stranger to Bolton having played to a packed-out Ritzy in 1989 when 20 fans were rushed to hospital after the hysteria got too much for them and dozens of girls fainted in the heat and emotion.

Staff at the American-style 700-capacity venue expect this Thursday's to be just as popular.

Manager Deborah Brown is still determined to secure a future performance from heart throb soulster Alexander O' Neal.

She said: "So many people will be disappointed. I will do all I can to reschedule his appearance. "But luckily most people seem to have bought tickets because they want to see Go West or Right Said Fred.

"We're all looking forward to Thursday and it should be a really good night.''

All attempts are being frantically made to resolve the passport issue and it is not known what happened for the US Government to revoke it in the first place.

A special stage is being constructed for the star-studded concert which organisers hope will round off Bolton's summer of pop which has already seen appearances from the lies of Oasis, Mel C, Louise and Craig David.

Bolton's Chicago Rock Cafe opened in June 1998 and is part of a large national chain based in Luton.

Right Said Fred and Go West are appearing at a number of outlets, but Bolton is their only North-west appearance.

DJ Matthew Davidge will be playing a selection of hits from 1957 to 1986 and there will be a drinks promotion from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

Tickets, priced £2 in advance and £3 on the night, can be purchased by credit card on (01204) 392393 or 370028.
