THE GMB Union has called for urgent action to prevent "construction sites turning into graveyards."

New figures show that the number of safety inspectors monitoring the UK's construction sites has fallen from 2,100 in 1992 to 1,321 in November, 1999.

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott and Health and Safety Executive officials are currently looking at ways to reduce construction industry fatalities -- up from 65 to 79 in the last year.
