THE Junior Millennium Rounders League is now coming to a close with all results now in for the year 9/10 group.

The last matches from this group saw Withins play host to Smithills who, having not won a match, knew they would have to pull something special out of the hat to get a result

Withins batted first and the innings brought out some magnificent scores, Carla Hurst scoring 17, Katie Roberts 10 and Becky Coleman 10. These scores helped Withins push their overall team score to 94 for the first innings.

Smithills then went in to bat but they did not start well losing three batters without scoring and three with only one run each. They then dug in but could only manage a total of 48 runs in their first innings giving Withins a healthy 46 runs lead to take them into the second innings.

This saw Withins start where they left off adding a further 68 runs to their score with Carla Hurst batting well again with 11 and Candice Henry scoring 10.

Smithills needed 115 runs to win the match and although their second innings brought about some more steady batting they could only manage to add a further 72 runs to their first innings score leaving Withins the winners 162 to 120.

This result saw Withins become the first 9/10 team to be crowned champions in the Junior Millennium Rounders League.

In the year 7/8 game Withins opened the batting and only scored 56 runs thanks to some fine fielding by Smithills, Diane Cuniff hit 11 followed by nine from Sian Charlesworth.

In reply Smithills batted steadily to trail at half time with 52. The second half saw Withins score a further 55 runs. Rachael Fletcher and Leanne Derbyshire each scoring 10, leaving Smithills needing 59 runs for the victory.

However, with only two batters reaching double figures they only added a further 51 runs to their first innings score. A close match with Withins winning 111 to 103.

Results: Year 9/10 Withins 162, Smithills 120; Withins 111, Smithills 103; Year 7/9 Sharples 158, Withins 92.
