ON Saturday, Bury Croquet Club had two teams on out of town lawns.
The golf croquet squad visited Pendle who turned out a very strong team.
In the three rounds of doubles only one game went to the visitors, Jean Hargreaves and Marie Robinson securing this.
After lunch in the singles, the Bury captain Tony Rudkin secured two wins as did Margaret Anderton.
Jean got one win, so the home side had taken the match by 16 games to six.
The short croquet team captained by Geoff Young went to Fylde.
In the opening round Barbara Young and Colleen Forkin notched up victories to make honours even.
In the second, Len Forkin got the only win for the visitors so the home side were two ahead.
After lunch, all four Bury players won their games so all depended on the last round.
With one game won, one lost and one doomed at time, Len's result was crucial.
Limit
The defining moment came when Len's opponent, on the time limit turn, had just drawn level but then missed a short roquet.
Len then made the "golden hoop" to secure a match victory by nine games to seven.
