PEACEMAKERS at a Bolton high school are expected to be among the first in the country to earn a new award.

A number of sixth formers at Turton High School are on course to officially become Millennium Volunteers. The award, similar to the Duke of Edinburgh, will reward them for their efforts to stamp out bullying.

For the past three years the school have been working with the Bolton Bully Free Zone project to train sixth formers in mediation techniques. Funding has now run out for the original Bolton project which has completed its aim of setting up Bully Free projects secondary schools in the borough.

But now the Millennium Volunteers project will carry on the good work in schools and other organisations for young people.

Turton sixth formers are on course to become the first to complete 200 hours of community service in and outside school which will earn them the award.
