AN Oasis fan was killed in a motorway accident just minutes after he left the Reebok Stadium where he had watched his heroes.

Bryn Daniel Thorpe, aged 19, from Wardley Avenue, Little Hulton, died after he was injured in a collision with a car on the M61.

Today his devastated parents Bryn and Pam were too upset to talk about the tragedy.

A neighbour said: "It has shocked the whole of our street. We are all very sad at the news. He was a well known and well liked lad."

Motorway police are appealing for witnesses to the accident and are investigating claims that the teenager had been trying to hitch a ride home from the rock concert. Mr Thorpe's body was discovered on the hard shoulder of the north bound carriageway at about 11.15pm on Saturday.

He had been injured in a collision with a Peugeot car being driven by Claire Bake, aged 20, from Bishop Auckland.

The motorway was closed on Saturday night as accident investigators examined the scene.

Mr Thorpe, who worked for AMEC engineering, was pronounced dead at the scene and was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital where he was formally identified by his parents.

A motorway police spokesman said: "It is not clear why he was on the motorway but there are some suggestions that he may have been trying to thumb a lift.

"Police had to remove a number of pedestrians from the hard shoulder of the motorway following the Oasis concert."

A sombre announcement was made at the concert last night about the news of the death and an appeal was made by the Gallagher brothers for fans to go home safely.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident to call them on 0161 872 5050.
