OLYMPIC hopeful Anthony Howard took a rest from intense training to make a splash at Bolton's newly-opened Jubilee Pool.

The swimmer, who has represented his country in the Commonwealth Games, competes in trials next week for the Olympics.

He took a welcome break to mix with people celebrating the opening of their refurbished pool in Brownlow Way, Bolton.

The Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Alan Wilkinson, officially opened the pool which he said was in memory of Cllr Betty Hamer -- one of the centre's stalwart fund-raisers.

Extensive work at the Jubilee Pool includes a new roof, floor re-tiling, a brand new reception area and new changing facilities.

Cllr Wilkinson said: "This pool is in memory of Betty Hamer who was so involved for many years in the Jubilee Pool.

"She cut the first sod and officially opened the facility. She would have been very pleased to see this day."

A £170,000 grant from Bolton Council has meant the pool, used by the disabled and able-bodied swimmers alike, could be transformed.

Dave Evitts, swim coach to Anthony, was also at the opening ceremony and explained how Anthony is taking a well-earned rest before next week's Olympic trials in Sheffield.

Dave said: "I'm more nervous than he is. Anthony has been doing a lot of intense training and weights and is now having a rest period before the trials.

"If Anthony comes first or second then he will be selected to represent Britain in the Games."

Swimmers at the centre enjoyed meeting the 20-year-old Commonwealth games bronze medalist and joined him in the 80 degree heated pool for a special swim.
