AN ambitious musical production being staged in Atherton is to be featured on the BBC's Live music web-site highlighting countrywide events during the week May 21-27.

The show is written by music industry professionals such as celebrated song writer, Graham Kendrick, and will feature local performers.

One of the organisers, Evan Bonson, was approached by the BBC with a view to the event being included in their Live Music campaign.

Final rehearsals for the musical are underway at locations in Atherton.

This major project, which began in the summer of 1999, will be performed at the Formby Hall, Atherton, on May 25 and 26.

The Hopes and Dreams musical has a Christian theme - exploring through dance, drama, comedy and music, what hopes and dreams the people of Atherton may have for the Millennium.

Musical Director, Rev Adrian Perry, who conducts the 60-strong choir, said: "We have been rehearsing since last September and are feeling very good about it.

"It will be a night of great entertainment, but it will also be a challenge to think about something which is so much bigger."

Drama co-ordinator, Lisa Holland, 19, who is currently studying at Surrey University for a drama degree, said: "We meet twice a week for rehearsals, the kids really enjoy it. Our youngest actor is 11."

The production is being masterminded by the Atherton Churches Together Committee, who have jointly chalked up five centuries of active service between them.

Cast member, Matt Hirst, said: "Rehearsals have been taking place for about two months. Everyone is working really well together. There is a good mix of people and we're really excited about putting the production on."

Co-ordinator John Barlow said: "It doesn't stop here. We are hoping to draw the different sections of the community together. We want to learn how we can work together to make Atherton a better place to live."

There will a Community 'Think Tank' Event on June 10 from 1pm-4.30pm at Hesketh Fletcher School, Hamilton Street. Organised by the Atherton Churches Together Committee it is a direct spin-off from the production.

The Hopes and Dreams musical begins at 7.30pm on May 25 and 26. Tickets available from Atherton Library (Adults £3, children accompanied by an adult are admitted free.)
