HERE'S something for you to get your teeth into.

It's British Sandwich Week this week (May 14-20).

And at no time since its invention in 1762 has this British creation enjoyed such popularity.

The British Sandwich Association reveals that this year we will consume some 2.3 billion sandwiches purchased out of the home with a total price tag of around £3.5 billion.

Furthermore, this really represents only a fraction of the market, as we consume some three times as many sandwiches at home!

Here are some sandwich facts:

The Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) were discovered by Captain Cook for his patron, the 4th Earl of Sandwich.

The world's biggest sandwich, weighing 400kg, was made by Marks & Spencer for the 1999 Total Sandwich Show (ratified by the Guinness Book of Records).

The sandwich is the UK's number one fast food. We spend £3.5 billion a year on commercially-made sandwiches -- more than three times what we spend on fish and chips!

All the sandwiches made in Britain in a year would reach the moon and back.
