ONE of the first official duties carried out by the new Mayor of Westhoughton, Janet Halliwell, was the annual Mayoral Sunday Parade, which wound its way from the Greenfields club in Wigan Road to St Bartholomew's for a service last Sunday.
Janet, a community services officer at the Winifred Kettle Community Care Centre, says her first week as Mayor of her home town has been "brillliant, but hectic."
Nearly every day - since taking over the office from Cllr John Ainscough - Janet has attended a variety of functions ranging from football matches to society AGMs.
She went on: "The responsibility didn't really dawn on me until they put the chain of office around my neck. Then it hit me."
Janet, who has been a Liberal Democrat councillor since 1995, added: "I would just like to thank everybody for all the good luck cards and flowers. The well wishes are really appreciated."
