WOODSFOLD Saw Mill at Chorley played host to some very scary visitors at the weekend as North West Water opened its new woodland trail.

The Woodsland Experience, a mile long woodland trail beginning and ending at the Dole Lane attraction, was officially opened when a six foot high woodland ant came face to face with grizzly bears.

The ingenious opening was just one part of the exciting weekend which saw the launch of another new attraction to greet the Lancashire region in time for summer.

The trail was created especially for children by the water company and incorporates various aspects of the National Curriculum, demonstrating to youngsters the life cycle of trees from seedlings to the saw mill.

Woodland officer Neville Kidd, said: "It is a beautiful trail which everyone will enjoy but it also has a more serious educational aspect for children. "We have a lot on offer for everyone on the day as well as plenty of bargains for the garden."

Trail walkers will be kept on their toes with some surprising wood carvings en route, including a larger than life woodland ant, as well as other creatures, such as a badger, an otter, deer and others.

The chainsaw carving artist, who created all the animals, was also at the opening demonstrating his talents.

The trail promises something for everyone, whether you just fancy a quick stroll or a more in-depth look at the wildlife.

Features include a pond with a waterfall, grazing Hebridean sheep, a wildflower meadow, managed tree plantations of different ages and a secluded glade and picnic area.

There is also a river and water wheel, a hide for wildlife observation, a quarry view point and a playground.

And if walking round is not enough for some people, they can try their hands at some old country crafts or just look on as drystone walling, willow weaving, hedgelaying and bird nest box making takes place.
