A SCHOOL which plans to start selecting pupils on their tennis abilities has been awarded a gold medal for its commitment to sport.

Governors at Rivington and Blackrod High School hope to aside up to 75 places for children on the Lawn Tennis Association's scheme for budding Wimbledon winners from the North West.

Now the school has been awarded the prestigious Sportsmark Gold award for its sporting facilities. Nationally, 551 schools applied for the title and 443 were awarded ordinary Sportsmark status.

But the Horwich school is one one only 63 winners to win the gold award and Anne Devine, Head of PE, said it was a tremendous achievement. She added: "I am delighted that Sport England has recognised our achievements in providing a progressive physical education programme and extending it to excellence in sporting provision, particularly the links we have made with local sports clubs."

The school has links with Lostock Tennis Club, Adlington Cricket Club and Forrest Badminton Club, and hopes to strenthen links with the LTA by taking in children who move to Bolton to join the scheme at Middlebrook.
