AS was expected, Tony Blair and New Labour's honeymoon period is over. The local council elections showed the public at large, despite giving the ruling party a mandate to carry out their wishes, are not gullible and require deeds not rhetoric and promises, and hand-outs at some future time.

A powerful section of the community are the grey-haired brigade, who command a substantial and powerful vote. Blair did himself no favours by offering them a paltry 75p. True, he did raise the winter heating allowance, he could afford it purely by restricting the amount given to top up the pension. He has lost sight of the original ideals of the Labour party and seems to be moving much nearer to the Tory philosophy. If he follows this trend it will be a sad day for the Labour voters and a worse one for the country.
