A YOUNG passenger died in an horrific crash in treacherous driving conditions.

Student Craig Jessop, aged 20, was killed when the car he was travelling in was involved in a collision with a lorry.

Mr Jessop of Bowen Street, Halliwell, had to be cut free from the wreckage of the Peugeot 406 by firefighters but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Today his parents, Tom and Pam, both aged 48, were too upset to talk about the death of their only child. They described it as a "tragic accident."

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident on Hall Lane, Aspull, yesterday morning. But there patches of black ice around the area and it is believed that the car may have skidded on the ice.

Peugeot driver Yogesh Mistry, aged 27, of Chorley Old Road, Bolton was taken to hospital for treatment to minor injuries and severe shock.

HGV driver Derek Bain from Chorlton in Manchester suffered shock.

The accident happened about 200 yards south of the junction with Bolton Road at about 8.50am.

Craig was a student at Bolton Institute was in his second year of studies of an HND business study course. As a youngster he attended Church Road Primary school and went on to Rivington and Blackrod High School.
