IN your picture of the two little girls at the water pump, the girl with the bucket is me - Mary Varley, six years old. The girl with the pram is my sister, Ellen.
We lived at Fogg's Cottage at Overhouses with my mother, father and brothers. My father worked for TUDC road gang, then went into the Forces in 1939 and rose to the rank of Sgt Major. We all went to Eagley School. The head master was Mr Bell and the head mistress was Miss Oakley.
It was wonderful to see the house and water pump - (page 156) - in the book '2000 Turton Through The Ages'. I shall always treasure this book, and thanks for the memories.
