A BROMLEY Cross councillor is backing residents who want plans scrapped for a mobile phone mast deemed too big and "dangerous to health". Cllr Alan Wilkinson says the number is now up for the 25-foot high phone pole, which residents claimed was "disguised" as a lamppost in planning applications.

People in Little Moor Clough want the plans dropped for the mast on the pavement in the middle of a residential estate, after fears the powerful transmitters can cause illness.

Cllr Wilkinson said: "If putting a mast on the street corner is setting a precedent, then we will get them all over the town.

"They are trying to say there is no problem, but if it is recognised the mobile phones are bad for health, then what does that mean for a powerful transmitter?

"It is a residential area with bungalows, which makes the mast stand out even more.

"It will be an eye-sore.

"If this goes through, it's the thin edge of the wedge.

"I warn anyone anywhere to watch out."

Briggs Fold Road resident Joe Davis said: "There is lots of doubt about these things.

"I heard there was one proposed for a school and they took it down because of health problems.

"If it's the case for children at school, then it's true for us who will have to live under it."

Mr Davis, 42, who has two children, said the residents would fight all the way to have the mast blocked.

Cllr Wilkinson is demanding the matter is heard at a full-meeting of the Planning and Environment Committee, so it can be properly debated.

People are being urged to write individually against the plans to Bolton Council planning department.
