NORTH West Water's major sewer replacement and repair scheme in Atherton Road, Hindley, gets under way on Monday, March 15, and is expected to last until Monday, May 9. The work will take place between Leigh Road and Stirling Road and will involve the closure of Atherton Road at various points throughout the contract period. Through traffic will not be possible at any time, although access will be maintained to all properties along the route.

Access to the two main roads in this section, Long Lane and Swan Lane, will also be maintained from Atherton Road.

However it will be necessary to select the correct end of Atherton Road from which to enter those roads, which will depend on the position of the work site.

The expected programme of work up to Easter will be:-

March 15 - work between Ashfield Avenue and Long Lane; March 22 - work between Long Lane and Swan Lane; March 27 (School Holidays) work between Leigh Road and Swan Lane.

At the completion of the Leigh Road to Swan Lane section, the closure point will return to points between Long Lane and Swan Lane.

The main diversion route for through traffic will be signed via Market Street, Bridge Street, Castle Hill Road, Wigan Road, Cricketers Way, Leigh Road and Schofield Lane.

For Wigan bound traffic, the route will be in reverse.

To take advantage of the road closure, other work will be carried out on Atherton Road at several locations by Wigan Council (road and pavement resurfacing) and Norweb (cable laying.)
