A FISH so ugly that housewives probably won't be allowed to look at it whole in the shops is being considered as an answer to the cod shortage. 'Grenadier and chips, please', may become a familiar request in fish and chip shops throughout the country. The Grenadier, described as a fish with a long tail and a hideous head, is being looked at as a possible source of food because of the fall-off in supplies of cod and other more popular species.

AN anonymous benefactor has offered to pay for the new gold-and-enamel pendant for the chain to be worn by the Mayor of the Bolton Metropolitan District. It will cost many hundreds of pounds.

BOLTON may soon have two new fire stations to replace that at Marsden-rd., The Secretary of State, in a letter to Bolton Fire Brigade sub-committee, suggests that, instead of spending £8,700 on repairs to the Marsden-rd. Fire Station, the committee should consider whether it is preferable to build two new fire stations, and if each new fire station could be built within the figure of £17,000. The Marsden-rd. station was built in 1899 at a cost of £17,000.

125 YEARS AGO

February 23, 1874

RAPID progress is now being made in the new railway being opened between Little Hulton and Bolton. The second set of rails are now being laid, and the station at Little Hulton is rapidly approaching completion. It is expected the new station will be opened for traffic towards the latter end of the present year.
