MUMS-to-be are being offered a unique experience to help them through the trials and tribulations of pregnancy.

Midwives at the Princess Anne Maternity Unit, are offering expectant women aromatherapy and massage sessions.

The sessions are the brainchild of midwife Heather Dowle, who hopes women will contact the service in the early stages of their pregnancy so they get most from it.

Whether they take along a partner, friend or relative is immaterial, midwives Gail Naylor and Heather, will guide them through the intricacies of aromatherapy.

Aromatic oils are widely recognised as being particularly beneficial to pregnant women as they ease many of the common complaints.

Lavender oil is widely recognised as being good for the heart and helps to keep the blood pressure normal.

It helps to stimulate the production of leukocytes - white blood cells concerned with eliminating waste products from the body, including infections.

It also has pain relieving properties, is a good antiseptic, has a calming effect on the nervous system and helps promote feelings of well being and reduce anxiety.

Massage is a widely recognised ancient art which is not only soothing, but also eases muscular aches and pains, and reduces stress levels.

Staff are hoping to launch the service in March and those who take part will be given background information on massage and aromatherapy.

There will also be a demonstration of the most common techniques and an opportunity for them to practise new found skills.

The initial session is expected to last between 2-3 hours and both Gail and Heather are hoping the skills learned will continue throughout the pregnancy and beyond.

Sessions can be booked via the Central Delivery Suite at the Princess Anne Maternity Unit on Bolton 390579.
