BURY schools have once again put in a table-topping performance.

Compared with neighbouring authorities and also the borough's Ofsted statistical neighbours in the Key Stage 2 performance tables, Bury has taken first place in all three core subjects of English, maths and science.

Although there was a slight drop over last year's standards, the performance of local youngsters is still 9pc above the national average in English, 8pc in maths and 7pc in science.

Bury Metro's education and community services committee chairman, Cllr Andrea Hughes, said: "The results are once again a tribute to the hard work and commitment of our local schools, their staff, governors, parents and of course, pupils.

"Bury has shown that even poorly funded it can produce results which have brought tremendous admiration from across the country.

"The Government has already shown its willingness to support education locally but, as a council, we will not be satisfied until we get the proper level of funding that our schools deserve."
