LAST night, about a quarter before seven o'clock, a widow named Maria Downes, shopkeeper, Stoneclough, aged 55 years, was killed by a passing engine as she was crossing the line at Stoneclough station. In order to get out of the station after arriving on trains from the Bolton direction, passengers are compelled to cross the lines to the great risk of their lives. We have before remarked on the want of another means of exit from the station having ourselves been witness to narrow escapes in crossing the rails at this identical station. The risk is especially great during the winter months.
