ONE report that seems destined for the waste bin is the Acheson report, a study ordered by Health Secretary Frank Dobson, designed to improve the living and health standards of the less well-off.

In his report, Sir Donald Acheson says, benefits should rise by 33pc to close the gap between rich and poor, and he urges the Government to fight inequalities which lead to the poor dying early.

Sir Donald is a former chief medical officer, and should know exactly what he's talking about.

Meanwhile - back in cloud cuckoo land - Tony Blair is telling us "Soon we'll all be middle class." Next, like Marie Antoinette, he'll be saying "Let them eat cake."
