I AM writing in reply to Mr Brian Entwistle's letter that was in the BEN on January 18, concerning the emptying of wheelie bins.

As Mr Entwistle stated, wheelie bins were not emptied when there was a heavy fall of snow. Although the main roads might have been perfectly usable, it seems to have slipped his attention that the majority of bins emptied are down back streets and cul-de-sacs not main roads and, therefore, are still heavy with snow and hazardous.

I can sympathise with both sides, ie bin men and the general public. I was affected with a missed collection of refuse because of hazardous conditions.

But surely Mr Entwistle would sooner have the inconvenience of more rubbish, than the thought or possibility of any refuse collector having a serious accident, when the weather conditions were clearly against them when working with a heavy vehicle like a bin waggon.

As for missed collections over the Christmas period. I would like to remind Mr Entwistle of how hard the Bolton refuse collectors work all year round and that, like anyone else, they are entitled to holidays.
