HORWICH rugby specialists Halbro have entered into a kit deal with Orrell. They are to supply full kit together with training tops and track suits for the whole of the lst team squad at the Premiership Two rugby union club. Halbro, which is based in Chorley New Road, is one of the leading producers of rugby sportswear in the world.

Managing Director Robert Moores said today: "We are delighted to be involved with Orrell Rugby Club - they have a great history and, we believe, a bright future.

"Our involvement will allow us to test our ideas and innovations to enable us to stay at the forefront of the technology of rugby clothing."

Mr Moores said the company, which was 80 years old, employed 155 people.

He said they were about to embark on a £300,000 investment programme which would involve replacing 40 knitting machines - some dating as far back as 1922 - with six modern ones.

It was not expected to lead to any redundancies.

"There is confidence in our part of the textile industry," Mr Moores said.

Orrell's Director of Commercial Affairs, Mike Higham, negotiated the deal with Halbro.

He said: "This is great news and has come just at the right time.

"Halbro are the largest manufacturer of rugby clothing in Europe and despite our temporary financial difficulties this deal is a sign that a major company sees a bright future ahead for the club."

The new arrangement does not affect the club's shirt sponsorship deal with sports company JJB.
