THE BEN'S story about heartless thieves who stole a television set from an intensive care ward relatives' room struck a chord - with a load of cowboys!

A big-hearted team from the country and western club at Little Lever Labour Club were so appalled at the Royal Bolton Hospital ward's plight that they decided to raise money for a new TV.

An impromptu whip round raised £41 towards the target but they have many more fund-raising events in the pipeline.

As reported in the BEN, two thieves sneaked into the relatives' room, which is secured with a digital lock, and somehow managed to steal the set - even though it was glued to the bracket.

Invaluable

The TV had been bought with donations from patients' relatives.

Sister Emma Battle, who has worked on the intensive care ward for nine years, said: "The TV was a great comfort to relatives who spend hours, days and weeks on the ward when their relatives are ill. It's invaluable because it provides a distraction." The theft didn't only sicken the Little Lever cowboys, but also other kind-hearted readers who have contacted the hospital to see if they can help.

A hospital spokesman said: "Our intensive care unit has had several offers of help and fundraising following the theft. Staff are getting in touch with these people and we are very grateful to them.

"It is reassuring to know that although some people are capable of carrying out such an unpleasant crime, there are others who are thoughtful and generous."
