I AM appalled and disgusted at the conduct of William Hague and many Conservative MPs in demanding that General Augusto Pinochet of Chile be allowed to escape justice by being returned to his country, instead of being extradited to Spain to face trial for murder.

The alacrity with which Mr Hague and his Tory sidekicks have sought to defend General Pinochet should appal all decent people.

Just as the Tories were content to appease Hitler in the 1930s, Hague is content to defend a man who seized power in a military coup in 1973, killing a democratically elected president, and led an 18 year reign of terror in which thousands of innocent Chilean civilians were tortured, mutilated and murdered.

In rushing to defend General Pinochet, William Hague and his party have blood on their hands too.
