I HAVE to agree with Bill Collison (BEN, November 27), also, J Grundy (November 28 28) regarding the revamping of the Town Hall Square. I also take my hat off to Cllr John Walsh who seems to be the only one who is in touch with what the public want. He questions the £400,000 overspent on the Square, and so do I.

What I, and others I have spoken to, want to know is what happened to the "good" flags which were taken up? Were they sold off and, if so, what has happened to the money spent from the sale? Also, the stainless steel bollards and litter bins are not at all in keeping, as were the black painted iron ones. (Where have they gone?)

Cllr Bob Howarth may say John Walsh was "nit-picking", but he was in order to nit-pick, and, believe me, Cllr Howarth, there are many more "nit-pickers" around.

It is easy to pass £400,000 off as "nit-picking", especially if it's other people's money you are spending. I cannot see where a million pounds has been spent, and, speaking to the workmen on Friday about how long the chains and bollards would remain standing around the War Memorial, one workman replied: "Oh, they won't pull these down."

Well, we shall see won't we? In the meantime, I hope the council doesn't come up with any more million pound ideas. We, the public, cannot afford them! The matter is, in future: cut your coat according to your cloth!
