THE HEADTEACHER of a Bolton School which came bottom of the town's GCSE league table has reassured parents that their children do not face a future on the dole.

George Tomlinson headteacher Tony Buckley said last year none of his school-leavers had to register unemployed -- half went into full-time education, a quarter got jobs and many took up training opportunities.

Mr Buckley said although the number of pupils leaving with 5 A -C grades had fallen, the Kearsley school had managed to cut the number of school-leavers with no qualifications at all.

Drives in literacy and numeracy, a homework club, tutor mentoring and target setting are all new initiatives to improve results , he said.

Headteacher of neighbouring Kearsley West school, Dorothy Lee, presented the prizes and is pictured second from left with (from left to right) Head Boy Bradley Neil, Headteacher Tony Buckley, maths prize-winner Bryony Wrench, form prize-winner Stuart Bertram and Head Girl Elizabeth Brennand.
