THE manners of local schoolboys are criticized by a woman of 67, who writes to ask us to thank one schoolboy who did show some good manners towards her. The old lady boarded a bus the other day, which was packed with schoolboys, all laughing and joking. Not one offered his seat to her, until an older boy boarded the bus and asked one to stand up for her. This he did, she writes, 'with a grumble and a black look'. She is indebted to the older boy who showed some thoughtfulness, and who, we suggest, did much to restore the old lady's faith in a younger generation. 125 YEARS AGO

TELEGRAPHIC communication is undoubtedly an essential requisite in these days of commercial competition. In any district where manufactories, ironworks, collieries, dyeworks, &c., numerously exists, telegraphic communication is of the utmost importance to the welfare and prosperity of its inhabitants. Radcliffe, Whitefield and district have for a long time been fully cognisant of the inadequate means of telegraphic communication - more particularly with Manchester. The local authorities have equally felt the pressure of taking immediate action to increase the telegraphic facilities; and if possible obtain through a wire from Manchester, or at least to join the one at Prestwich, to Manchester. It is now fully and generally anticipated that a wire will be laid, which will prove beneficial to the two townships.
