By Julie Freer ARCHIE is just 18 months old, but is less than half the weight of a healthy dog.

He was taken to the Bolton Destitute Animal Shelter after being found wandering the streets of Deane.

Shelter staff are now trying to trace his owners and are threatening legal action if they find them.

Manager Mr Neil Martin, manager, said: "He was in a deplorable condition. "There were many signs which showed that he had been starved over a long period of time. "He weighs 7.2 kilos, he should be between 16 and 18 kilos. We presented him with a bowl of food and he did not know what to do.

"But he was rooting around in the bin for food. He has probably been starved since he was born.

"Three girls brought him to us and they certainly did the right thing.

"The only problem we face is that if the owner comes forward and is willing to pay a fine of £50 for having a stray dog within seven days, we have to hand him back. "But if he does come forward, I can assure you that he will be reported to the RSPCA.

"If people find that they cannot look after a dog, they should contact us.

"There are ways which either we can help them or we can put them in touch with someone who can." The shelter can be contacted on Bolton 526486.
