EXPERTS in domestic violence were today hosting an open day as concern grows about Bolton becoming the wife beating capital of Greater Manchester.

Specialists were on hand at the Waggon Road Community Centre to give advice to anyone who may come into contact with families suffering abuse.

Yesterday the BEN revealed how the number of domestic violence incidents reported to Bolton police is soaring.

Specialists believe this is just the tip of the iceberg and are keen that anyone who may come in contact with women suffering abuse know how to react positively.

Breightmet Area Action held the open day because women often hint about the problems to people such as GPs, solicitors, health visitors, neighbours and even bosses.

"How they react will determine what the woman does next," said one front line worker.

"If they do not get a positive response they might go back to the abuser. It is important people do not fob them off and tell them what help is available."

Experts from refuge Fortalice, officers from the police family support unit and housing officials were on hand to offer guidance at the open day, hosting sessions aimed at raising awareness of the effects of violence on women and children.
