TV troubleshooter Sir John Harvey Jones's latest enterprise is to win university status for Bolton. The famous industrialist has called on Education Secretary David Blunkett to approve Bolton Institute's bid to become a university. Sir John's efforts to save ailing companies shot him to stardom in the 1980s when his Troubleshooter series made him a household name.
He married a Boltonian and renewed his links with the town when he featured local company Velden Engineering on his programme. Even when ill health forced him to go into semi-retirement, Britain's most famous businessman kept in touch through his ties with Bolton Institute.
He told Mr Blunkett: "For some time now I have been supporting the work of the Bolton Business School which, in my view, does an excellent and much needed job in a a somewhat neglected area of Lancashire."
He went on to say that he was happy to support the campaign to win university status for the Institute.
