YOU won't be able to get a word out of anyone at a Chorley high school this morning (Thursday, April 23).

For everyone - from the caretaker to the headteacher - at St Michael's CE, Astley Road, will have their heads stuck in a book - for World Book Day.

During period one, from 8.55am-9.40am, the whole school will read a book.

Pupils, teachers, office staff, technicians, site manager and caretaker will take part in the 'novel' idea to help encourage pupils to read more.

The school said: "The idea of this is to send a message to all the children that reading is an activity we all enjoy. We hope also that the novelty value of the idea will make an impression."

Year seven pupils will also dress up as characters from a favourite book and they will be supported by English staff and other teachers who have promised to don the costumes of literary characters.

All pupils will be given a £1 book token exchangeable at any good book shop.

Others activities for the week have included:

A workshop led by a librarian form Chorley Library.

Year 8 pupils visiting St Laurence's primary school to read to pupils.

A Midsummer Night's Dream workshop in Astley Park for pupils from year 9.

Year 9 pupils giving talks on Shakespeare in the school library.
