CHILDCARE has come under the microscope in a House of Commons speech by Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle.

Mr Hoyle was due to make a ten minute speech on Wednesday about the future of nursery provision and inspection following the death of Chorley toddler Alex Rae last July.

In his speech, Mr Hoyle asked for local authorities to be issued with legally binding inspection procedures.

The MP hoped the proposals would receive support and eventually become law. Already more than 100 MPs have signed Mr Hoyle's motion calling for a review of nursery legislation.

Mr Hoyle said: "As the number of nursery places grows it is essential the quality of nursery care is reviewed and people are reassured that everything is being done to look after the interests of their children."
